Riots

            Incidents of Riots (68,945) registered during the year declined by 34.2 per cent over the decade 1992-2002 (1,04,749), 17.9 per cent decrease over the Quinquennial Average of 1997-2001 and 9.5 percent over the previous year (76,222). The highest number of incidents (8,675) were reported in Bihar, followed by Kerala (8,090). The crime rate was the second highest in Kerala (25.1) against the National average of 6.6.

Arson

            The incidents of Arson during 2002, increased by 2.9 percent over the Quinquennial Average of 1997-2001 and 12.2 percent over 2001. Gujarat reported the highest number of incidents accounting for 16.2 per cent of the total cases at the National level.  The highest crime rate was also registered in Gujarat and Jammu & Kashmir (3.7 each) against the National average of 1.1.
